October brings cooler weather, cozy sweaters, and of course—Halloween! Whether you’re getting your favorite flannel ready for bonfires or spot-cleaning fake blood from your vampire cape, a little laundry prep can make the season easier (and fresher).

· Handle costume care like a pro.

Most Halloween costumes are made from delicate synthetic fabrics. Always check the label before tossing them in the wash. When in doubt, hand wash with cold water and mild detergent. If there’s glitter or sequins, spot clean gently to keep the sparkle where it belongs.

· Say goodbye to candy stains.

Sticky caramel, chocolate, and frosting are practically part of Halloween tradition—but not on your clothes! Treat candy stains quickly by soaking in cold water, then blot with a mix of vinegar and baking soda. Avoid hot water—it can set sugar stains permanently.

· Fall mud and leaf stains? No problem.

Autumn adventures often leave evidence behind. Use a soft brush to remove dried dirt before washing. For extra-tough stains, pre-treat with stain remover and use a warm water cycle.

Before you store or wear those sweaters and blankets, give them a refresh. Wash knits inside out on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry to prevent stretching.
