4 Areas to Clean to Keep Your Home Healthy and Hygienic

1.    Soft Surfaces

Surfaces like the sofa, carpeting or rugs, mattresses, etc. should be cleaned often using soap and water.  Any items that can be placed into a washing machine (pillows, mattress covers, cushion covers) should be laundered using the warmest water setting recommended by the manufacturer and dried completely.

Items that wont fit into a washing machine can be disinfected with an EPA-registered household disinfectant (see list of appropriate disinfectants.)

2.    Linens, Towels and Clothing

Bed lines should be washed weekly and bathroom towels should be laundered every 3 days.  These items should be laundered in the hottest cycle setting and dried completely.

When washing items from a person in your home that is sick it is best to wash these items separately from the other laundry and wearing gloves is recommended.  Do not shake the dirty laundry, launder the items in the warmest water setting recommended by the manufacturer.  Be sure to disinfect the laundry basket/hamper and wash your hands after removing the gloves.

3.    Technical Devices

Phones, tablets, computer keyboards, computer mouse, remote controls, light switches, etc. are all touched a lot.  Keeping a container of disinfectant wipes nearby to give the items a once-over before each use will help to keep germs from spreading.

4.    Hands

Keeping your hands clean will help to prevent getting sick more than anything else you can do!  Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the recommendation.  Wash your hands when encountering anyone or anything outside your home (packages, mail, groceries.)  Additionally, be sure to wash your hands after sneezing or coughing into them and after blowing your nose.

If soap and water is no available, using a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol based is recommended.
